Humane Way PO Box 52 Forked River, New Jersey 08731-0052 |
| Description: |
If you were abused, exploited or mistreated, abandoned or handicapped, injured or ill, facing death ... where would you go? If you were an animal, you'd find Popcorn Park Zoo to be the place where peace, security and loving care are finally yours.
From its humble beginnings in 1977 when an injured raccoon was brought to us with his leg caught in a leghold trap, Popcorn Park has grown to be a refuge exclusively for wildlife, exotic and farm animals who faced uncertain futures or death.
Rigby was saved through amputation of the mutilated limb, and, now unreleasable, he became a permanent resident at our Forked River facility. Soon after, we were brought or alerted to more animals needing rescue, protection and medical care, but who could not be released. We gave these animals spacious enclosures, and the best life possible considering they were used to being in the wild.
Word got out ... beyond our shelter facility which catered to pets, we would help animals in desperate need, and before you knew it, we were home to a lion from Ohio used in a magician's act who'd grown too big and faced euthanasia, two young black bear sisters poorly treated and with severe skin problems in a roadside zoo in Maine, a monkey headed for research who escaped his crate at Newark airport, a seagull with a broken wing from Long Island ... and the list goes on.
Popcorn Park Zoo is a federally licensed refuge on 7 acres in the beautiful Pine Barrens of New Jersey. As a means of helping support these animals, the Popcorn Park Wildlife Club was created as a way to individually sponsor particular animals in the zoo. Currently over 200 animals and birds call Popcorn Park Zoo home. (Admittedly, once returned to health, some of the migratory birds could have flown on, but they enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and decided to stay.)
Among our residents are included African lions, Bengal tigers, American black bears, crab-eating macaques as well as many other monkeys, cougars, bobcats, white-tail and fallow deer, Australian wallabies, turtles, tortoises and other reptiles, foxes, goats and sheep, emus, horses, cows, peacocks, vultures, a llama, a muntjack ... whew! we really take care of a lot of critters!
But don't take our word for it ... take a walk on the wild side, and see who else lives here at Popcorn Park Zoo! Popcorn Park Zoo is proud to have saved hundreds of animals from pain, abuse, exploitation, illness and death, and to give them the safe life they deserve.
While our farm animals are domestic, and our native wildlife call the United States and Canada their home, other residents have their origins in Africa, India, Australia, Asia, South America, and Barbados. In fact, we have representatives from every continent but Antarctica!
And while we have accepted many of our animals from New Jersey, where we're located, they have also come from as far away as Texas, Iowa, Ohio, Florida, Maine, New Mexico, Canada, New York and Missouri.
And all this on a mere seven acres!
